Easy to be Green
As a dense, walkable neighborhood with wide sidewalks, several urban trails, and a free shuttle service, downtown makes it easy to “be green” and less automobile-dependent. Even the points farthest apart are convenient and quick to reach by bicycle, transit or walking. Local retail, personal and professional services, oodles of entertainment and several parks — and perhaps your business office, too — are a scant stones-throw away when downtown is your home.

As it revitalizes and grows, downtown Colorado Springs is poised to become the city’s most prominent and intentionally sustainable neighborhood. In the Imagine Downtown master plan, creating a more sustainable environment is a primary value and committees are working to influence code reform, building standards and infrastructure that encourage green components and provide development incentives. In the Imagine plan, one identified strategy toward a more sustainable district is for downtown to adopt the “2030 challenge.” For more information on this program, go to
www.architecture2030.org.

Major projects in the downtown pipeline, such as Pikes Peak Place — a 20- to 24-story high-rise of retail, office and residential — are leading the way, with such attributes as sun and shade buildings, rooftop gardens, numerous energy and water conservation measures and overall, a low carbon footprint. This project features the collaboration of renowned “green” architect William McDonough, featured in Time magazine and world publications. Learn more about him at www.mcdonough.com.

For those interested in purchasing locally grown organic produce and naturally raised meats, the summer Farm & Art Market at America the Beautiful Park is a fabulous resource. The market and many near-downtown restaurants and farms also sell and participate in a unique urban-rural cooperative, the Peak to Plains Alliance.
This initiative envisions a system in which local consumers enjoy the health benefits of fresh local food, and farm and ranch experiences; farmers and ranchers are compensated fairly for their products; and working lands and adjacent environments are stewarded according to ecological principles.
