 Groceries & Household
In addition to a variety of independent neighborhood markets, downtown residents can easily access several large supermarkets and a major discount center. Safeway operates stores on S. Nevada and N. Wahsatch, King Soopers has a store on W. Uintah, and Wal-Mart on 8th Street is accessible by both vehicle and on foot or bicycle via the Midland Trail connecting at America the Beautiful Park.
 Parks, Trails and Public Spaces
Several parks and trails lace through downtown, with an “emerald necklace” ringing the district and connecting to other City and Country trail systems. Living downtown, it’s a hop-skip-and-a-jump out the front door to these great outdoor spaces:
  • Acacia Park — the city’s original town square, bound by Tejon St., Bijou, Nevada and Platte. Popular gathering spot for picnics, seasonal frolic in the Uncle Wilber fountain, shuffleboard, concerts, markets and more.
  • America the Beautiful Park — the city’s newest grand space with grand views and grand amenities. Stroll the perimeter paths, link to the east-west Midland Trail or the north-south Pikes Peak Greenway Trail, let the kids have their hey-day on the playground, and catch all kinds of concerts and festivals throughout the year. Access from Cimino Street off W. Colorado Ave.
  • Antler’s Park — this quaint, hidden charm is immediately west of the famous hotel and offers a quiet respite from the workday or a place to catch jazz and more on a summer’s eve. Access from The Depot shops.
  • Carnegie Library gardens — located behind (south) the restored 1905 Carnegie Library, which houses special collections for the adjacent Penrose main library, these newly installed gardens include informal and formal plantings, patron benches, places for sculpture and more. Open during library hours; call 631-6333.
  • First Christian Church Labyrinth — Enjoy a contemplative labyrinth walk at 16 E. Platte Avenue.
  • Monument Valley Park — one of the town founder’s most treasured gifts to the city, beginning in 1904, Monument Valley Park extends north and south, parallel to and east of I-25, between Bijou St. and Jackson St. Tennis courts, a public swimming pool, demonstration and formal gardens, as well as numerous playing fields and picnic spots make this a perennial outdoor playground — in the heart of downtown!
  • Pikes Peak Greenway Trail — 14 miles of north-south trail on downtown’s western edge with a major segment running through Monument Valley Park. A favorite for runners, cyclists and walkers.
  • Pioneers Museum grounds — The expansive grounds on all four sides of the city’s primary historical museum, offer a pleasant respite from business or daily life with numerous sculptures, gardens and pedestrian benches. Access from S. Tejon, E. Vermijo or S. Nevada streets or exiting from Plaza of the Rockies South Tower.
  • Shooks Run Park and Trail — 3.9 miles of north-south trail on downtown’s eastern perimeter. Access map online at www.springsgov.com from Parks Recreation & Cultural Services link.
